A pair of brooches, set to the bodies with a shape unenhanced fancy colour pink in an and setting with a weight of 0.10 , additionally set with three cushion shape old mine natural unenhanced fancy colour cinnamon in open back grain and rubover settings with a combined weight of 0.45 carats, and punctuated by four cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back grain and rubover settings with a combined weight of 0.08 carats, the wings set with thirty two cushion shape natural unenhanced in open back grain and rubover settings with an approximate combined weight of 1.60 carats, also decorated with four rectangular natural in open back rubover settings with a combined weight of 0.40 carats, set throughout with one hundred and seventy two round diamonds in grain settings with a combined weight of 1.72 carats, the eyes composed of four round rose cut natural emeralds in closed back rubover settings with a combined weight of 0.04 carats. The total approximate diamond weight is 2.35 carats, the total approximate emerald weight is 0.44 carats, to a finely modeled butterfly brooch, with scalloped wings, legs and antennae issuing from the central diamond set body, intricately pierced with fancy backholing, fitted to reverse with a secure pin and scroll clasp and with additional and pin, each approximately 2.4cm in length. yellow , English, 1890.

These brooches has been assessed by our in-house gemmologists with the emeralds most likely to be Colombian in origin.

Insect brooches became particularly popular in the Victorian period. Their symbolism was rich and included the butterfly's spiritual identification with the soul, while their vivid coloration in nature gave jewellers 'carte blance' with designing lavish and joyful pieces with a myriad of gemstones and colours.

It was not uncommon to see fashionable Victorian ladies wearing insect brooches in multiples.
