Vintage emerald and diamond ring. Centrally set with a rectangular old cut natural Colombian emerald with no colour enhancement in an open back split corner claw setting with an approximate weight of 3.11 carats, flanked by two tapered baguette cut diamonds in open back platinum rubover settings with an approximate combined weight of 0.60 carats, to an intricate pierced openwork gallery with elegant cheniers and square backholing, flanked by gently sloping inward tapered shoulders leading to a solid D-shape shank. Marked 18 carat yellow gold and platinum, English, circa 1950s, accompanied by Gemmological Certification Services report #5775-1374.

Rings are one of the most powerful and evocative pieces of jewellery. In its most rudimentary form, a ring is a simple band, composed of any material from bone, wood, glass to precious metal, which encircles the finger.

Rings are often seen as a symbol of love, with the never-ending circle denoting the infinity of sentiment. This concept was first invented by the ancient Greeks; it was however during the Roman period, that rings were formally introduced as part of the marriage ceremony.
