Description

Medieval lion intaglio ring. Set centrally with an oval cabochon cornelian intaglio engraved with a stylised representation of a lion with a crucifix on its back, with alternating amuletic cross and crescent motifs to the borders, the carved scrolling shoulders proceeding to a solid D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 4.19g, circa 11th-12th century AD.

The cross and crescent symbols are likely to be 'magical signs' which were thought to invoke special powers on the wearer. The lion intaglio is medieval in origin, and may refer to St Mark the Evangelist who was often represented in this form.
