Description

Ancient Roman gold ring with intaglio of Mercury. Set with an oval glass intaglio of a standing Mercury, holding a coin bag and caduceus, within a closed back rubover setting flanked by cirular beading to an intricate twisted wirework solid shank. Tested yellow gold, approximate weight 3.37g, circa 1st - 2nd century AD.

Mercury is the god of commerce, communication and is a guide of souls to the underworld. He is often pictured holding a caduceus. This ring displays a very skilful example of Ancient Roman craftsmanship and is in fine condition, commensurate with its age.
