A silver pocket watch. A silver pocket watch with black italic numerals to the white face and gold outer dotted border, with two hands and a second dial to the lower face with hinged glass cover, fluted top wind and solid oval hoop. Intricate square chequered niello work to the outer band and the whole of the reverse, hinged at the base and opening to expose maker's marks. Face measures 3.7cm in diameter, total diameter with case 4.4cm, total depth 1cm approximately. Inside of case to reverse marked silver '0.800', marked 'NIEL HF', '87.31', 'ANCRE Ligne Droite Levées Visibles Balancier Compensén SPIRAL BREGUET 15 Rubis', circa 1909.
This is a fine example of niello work. Niello is a black material consisting of a mixture of lead, silver and copper sulphides, placed into engraved metal. This chequered pattern of the silver and niello is an effective contrast, applied by a skilled hand.
