Ancient Roman gladiator silver ring. A weighty silver ring, the central oval plaque engraved with a gladiatorial scene of a 'Murmillo' gladiator, a bear rearing up on its hind legs, star and palm frond (denoting victory), flanked by smoothly conforming broad shoulders with shield shaped detailing and flowing through to a D-shape shank. Tested silver, circa 3rd century AD.
This ring portrays a type of gladiator known as a 'murmillo'. These iconic gladiators from the Roman Imperial Age were equipped with a plumed helmet, gladius sword, rectangular shield, leather belt similar to a boxing belt and shin guards.
