Antique amethyst signet ring in yellow gold, circa 1890. A yellow gold ring set with a
cushion shaped amethyst
intaglio in a
collet setting with an approximate weight of 10.00 carats, carved with a full length profile of Hercules with a club and wearing a lion skin, on a wide tapered
shank.
This depiction of Hercules was most likely inspired by a statue from the fourth century BC found in the 18th century in the ruins of the villa of the Roman emperor Hadrian at Tivoli outside Rome.

In many cultures amethyst has been known as the stone of protection. A purple variety of quartz with a hardness of 7. The Greek for amethyst was 'amethustos' which means 'not drunk'. The stone was thought to protect against drunkenness. For this reason goblets were sometimes made of amethyst.
