ROMAN FINISH

The dull yellow effect on a plain or modelled surface gained by depositing fine gold on a roughened surface. It is softer than the bright finish, and was obtained by early jewellers with chemical action on the article itself by means of which the alloy of silver and copper was eaten out on the surface and pure gold left.
