Oscar Heyman Bros.

The world thinks that Cartier made the necklace on which hung the famous D, Flawless, 69.42 carat Taylor-Burton diamond, but they did not. The company that actually made the necklace was founded by two brothers, who were apprenticed as young boys to Carl Fabergé and opened their own family business in 1912. They are Oscar Heyman & Bros. the manufacturers behind Cartier, Van Cleef and countless other world renowned jewellers.

With no obvious prospects in their native Latvia, Oscar and Nathan Heyman 13 and 16 respectively, left home to become apprentices with their uncle at the famous Fabergé workshop in St Petersburg, Russia. They left Russia to avoid conscription into the Imperial Army and went to New York. Oscar then worked for Pierre Cartier who was just starting Cartier, New York. In 1912 Oscar and Nathan formed the company we know today as Oscar Heyman & Bros. Cartier was their first customer, since which time they have been creating exemplary pieces for well known houses. Oscar Heyman has been well known in professional circles for nearly one hundred years but, now, as pieces come back into circulation the general public are being offered the chance to purchase some of these rarities. There is a cachet to owning an Oscar Heyman piece, the work is known for its attention to detail and fine quality materials in a trade where attention to detail and quality is 'de rigeur'. They are the jeweller's jeweller.

As Oscar Heyman himself once said, "Jewellery should never be a candidate for re-design, but should transcend time, like a fine painting".
